Young Buffaloes make Eswatini Bank cup history

06 May 2019

Young Buffaloes made history by becoming the first side to win the Eswatini Bank Cup three times in a row after edging Royal Leopard 1-0 at the Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Buffaloes’ victory yesterday, courtesy of a late Sandile Gamedze strike, follows their similar success in the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Eswatini Bank Cup. Watched on by His Majesty King Mswati III, the Royal family, Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini, Minister of Sports Harries Bulunga, Cabinet Ministers and thousands of EmaSwati, man of the match Gamedze scored a decisive winner in the 76th minute as the match looked destined for extra time.

Captain Nhlanhla Gwebu lifted the trophy that ensures Emathole will compete in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup. Yesterday’s victory moves Buffaloes level with the most successful sides in the history of the Eswatini Bank Cup, runners up Leopard and Mbabane Swallows, all with three titles to their names.

In the first of the three finals yesterday, Manzini Wanderers Ladies beat their Young Buffaloes counterparts 1-0 to become the first champions of the Eswatini Bank Cup Ladies tournament. Then in the second final, 10-man Tambuti beat Manzini Sundowns 2-1 to be crowned U-20 champions.

The finals also saw performances from local stars Phathwakahle and DJ Mbo as well as South African artists DJ Tira and Tipcee.
