Green Mamba crowned MTN Premier League champions

20 May 2019

Green Mamba survived a minor scare to beat Mbabane Highlanders 1-0 and be crowned champions of the MTN Premier League at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Malawian striker, Gomez Gondwe, a second half substitute, scored the all-important goal with less than 20 minutes to play as Royal Leopard looked destined to be crowned champions of Eswatini.

Mamba and Leopard went into yesterday’ deciding games tied on points and the Correctional Services side needed to at least match Leopard’s score line in their match against Young Buffaloes at Mavuso Sports Centre in order to win the title.

While Green Mamba and Highlanders’ match was goalless at Somhlolo, Leopard were already beating Buffaloes 2-0 with 20 minutes to go in both matches. League sponsors MTN were already planning on transporting the League trophy to Manzini when Gondwe struck after a freekick, ensuring Mamba took home the E1 million cheque.

Caleb Ngwenya’s charges will now represent the country in next seasons’ CAF Champions League.
