GOVERNMENT SIGNS E30 MILLION CONTRACT WITH MALAYSIAN COMPANY FOR PROBASE PILOT PROJECT

The Ministry of Public Works & Transport signed a E30 million contract with Probase Company of Malaysia to construct a 6km road from Buka to Mdzimba. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place on the August 18, 2014.

Present during the signing ceremony was the Ministry’s Principal Secretary, Mr. Cyril Kunene, officials from the Roads Department and Probase Company Representatives. Kunene said this was the first part of the pilot project by the company and Probase will address the road challenges the country is facing at the moment. The duration of the pilot project is expected to last about 6 months which cost 60% less than conventional road construction. He further said the Ministry was grateful to the government for the approval of E30 million which was budgeted for the road. “As the country moves towards vision 2022 we are happy that a company of Probase magnitude came to Swaziland to help us by bringing their latest technology to aid in road maintenance and in the same way save it will save costs”.

Speaking during the signing ceremony Probase Group of Companies General Manger Seow Cheng Seong said they were appreciative that the Government of Swaziland gave his company the opportunity to work with them and help the country’s development of the road infrastructure. Seong further highlighted that the probase road system is a technology applied to unpaved roads in order to improve them. It involves the mixing of Probase chemicals with the soil in order to strengthen and harden the soil. The road is then sealed with a Probase sealant and stone chips. Advantages of the system is that it is environmentally friendly, provides dust and mud free environment, lessens water penetration into the soil , protects soil surface from erosion, wear and tear and increase lifespan of the road.
