The Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) will host a workshop to discuss the methods that can be used to establish an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in Swaziland. The Minister of ICT, Senator Winnie Magagula, will open the two-day workshop at 9am on Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Royal Villas, Ezulwini. Minister Magagula will also host a cocktail dinner for the guests and participants at Sibane Hotel, Ezulwini starting at 6pm on the same day. An IXP is a physical infrastructure through which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) exchange Internet traffic between their networks. It provides a focal point for internal routing for Internet content within the country. “The participation and interest of all ISPs and other stakeholders is critical for the success of this initiative,” said the Director of Communications, Mandla Motsa. The workshop has been organized in partnership with the African Union Commission, under the African Internet Exchange Point System (AXIS) Program, for the purpose of facilitating the establishment of national and regional IXPs in member states. The African Union has appointed the Internet Society as the program consultant who will facilitate the workshop. The Ministry has invited the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation, ISPs, large content generators like banks, and the University of Swaziland, among other stakeholders, to attend.
