VISION
Action for peace and social justice through education, the natural, social and human sciences, culture, communications and information.

MISSION STATEMENT

The National Commission seeks to fulfill Swaziland’s obligations as a Member State, to contribute to the development of UNESCO programmes and strategic priorities by enabling free flow information and making it easy for citizens to access, process and participate meaningfully in sustainable development, and by promoting   collaboration among nations, through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information

OBJECTIVES


  • Set up by the government of Swaziland in accordance with the Article VII of the UNESCO Constitution, the National Commission operates, on a permanent basis, acting as an agency of consultation, liaison and information, as well as mobilizing and coordinating partnerships with governmental and non-governmental bodies in UNESCO’s fields of competence: education, sciences, culture and communication and information.
  • To promote, develop and support comprehensive education sector responses to HIV and AIDS through the Global Initiative on Education and HIV & AIDS (EDUCAIDS).

National Commission promotes a set of values, and that the global penetration of these values is indeed transforming the world, leading to peace and progress. These values include:

SERVICES

The National Commission offers the following services;

  • An Information Centre/Library
  • Houses collection that covers not only education, but all UNESCO’s field competence
  • Besides books, there are journals, reports, conference proceedings, handbooks, calendars of universities around the globe, information brochures,  national reports as well as local newspapers
  • There are also UNESCO’s trend setting instruments in education, the sciences, culture and communication
  • There are several policy statements, both national and international, housed in the library
  • Has two computer stations for use by patrons in accessing internet
  • Liaises between UNESCO, the government, NGOs, parastatals and individuals
  • Supports the development of national policies and plans in education through provisions of expertise and finances
  • Builds capacities in Management of Education Systems through EMIS
  • Promotes Inclusive Education, Teachers’ Education and Quality in Education as well as Adult Literacy
  • Supports the implementation of the Water Act while building capacity in the Basic and Engineering Sciences starting with the formulation of a National Science and Technology Policy
  • Promotes and protects Human Rights while building a culture of peace, safeguarding and promoting Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage
  • Promotes press freedom and capacitates media professionals
  • In addressing HIV and AIDS issues, UNESCO is implementing EDUCAIDS
  • Advertises available UNESCO fellowships, vacant posts at UNESCO as well as International Conferences sponsored by UNESCO.
