The Minister of Information, Communications and Technology (ICT), MP Dumisani Ndlangamandla, has urged management and staff of the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) to focus on taking Swaziland forward with a vibrant communications sector. The Minister was speaking during his familiarization tour of the company on Monday May 5, 2014 in Mbabane.

Minister Ndlangamandla noted that the communications industry was crucial in any developing country because it is a great economic driver. “A vibrant communications sector is usually one of the indicators of developed countries. We need to pursue this goal for Swaziland to reach its set targets,” the Minister said.

The Minister observed that SPTC could not do this on its own and noted that it was important for all companies in the communications sector to work together. “Let us work together to take the country forward. We can only do this if there are good working relations between all the partners that SPTC works with, including MTN Swaziland,” he said.

Minister Ndlangamandla also cautioned management and staff to steer clear of corruption because such practices would derail them from their mandate.

The Managing Director of SPTC (MD), Petros Dlamini, explained that SPTC was divided into two business units; Swazi Telecom and Swazi Post. He listed SPTC’s values as transparency, honesty, excellence, innovation and social responsibility which, he noted, are in line with government’s stance against corruption. “Our social responsibility projects include the Swazi Telecom Charity Cup, King’s Cup Golf Tournament and the Swaziland International Trade Fair,” he said. The MD said the company’s real resources were its staff and it was a concern that staff was leaving for greener pastures.

The Minister toured the Contact Centre, Network Operations Centre, Test Desk, Data Centre, Telecentre, Mbabane Post Office as well as the Earth Station at Ezulwini. The Chairman of the Board, Arthur Ngcobo, presented the Minister with a token of appreciation which, he said, was a symbol of the company’s excitement at the chance to familiarize the Minister with their operations.
