On Friday afternoon in an annual general meeting of the Eswatini Conference of Churches 2019 at the George Hotel in Manzini, the Minister for Home Affairs Her Royal Highness Princess Lindiwe told religion leaders that supervision of religious bodies is a key portfolio responsibility of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Minister said that His Majesty’s government will ensure that it finalise legislation on the effective oversight and supervision of Churches and Non-Governmental Organisations. The legislation will help bring clear structure, accountability and effectiveness in the development of religious affairs and charitable activities in the kingdom. Princess Lindiwe called upon churches to affiliate with recognized Christian bodies such as Eswatini Conference of Churches, the League of Churches and the Council of Swaziland Churches. “It is imperative for one to account and affiliate with the already mentored structures” she said.

Additionally the Minister maintained that the Conference of Churches should be be pro-active and start reviewing its own oversight framework. This may include but not limited to areas such as the registration and accreditation of member churches and Pastors, financial accountability, leadership ethics and code of practice and proper resolution of disputes.

In closing Princess Lundiwe encouraged all Churches within the Kingdom of Eswatini to register and comply with the laws of the land. Furthermore, she asked Christians to continue praying for the country. “May I exhort the body of Christ to please continue to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation as well as the success of the Strategic Roadmap for 2019-2023 that was launched on Monday by His Excellency the Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini.
