Background

The Swaziland National AIDS program was established in 1987 to respond to the HIV epidemic.  The core mandate of the National AIDS program is to coordinate Health sector interventions as they account for more than 70% of the total HIV response.
During the development of the two Multi sectoral HIV/AIDS strategic plans NSP1-2003-2005 and NSP 11-2006-2008 and NSF 2009-2014 the health sector response plan was developed in cognizance of the role that the health sector plays in addressing HIV and AIDS.
