The annual Umhlanga/ Reed Dance came to a spectacular conclusion on the main day on Sunday as nearly 80 000 maidens sang and danced in front of Their Majesties King Mswati III and the Queen Mother including thousands of guests at Ludzidzini Royal Residence. The much anticipated event started at about 3.30pm with maidens announcing their arrival at the arena with a song. Their arrival in full traditional attire drew the attention of tourists, Swazi citizens and foreign media who included Cable News Network (CNN), Reuters, Associated Press, Etv and Agence France Press (AFP). Local security personnel however were able to maintain order, and tourists from countries such as Austria, Kenya, Canada, Russia and Germany excitedly took colorful pictures of the maidens including the King’s arrival and traditional dance display of appreciation by the talent the young ladies displayed. Traditional warriors joined the King during this spectacular highlight, as they lowered their traditional shields at feet of the young women (kudlalisela). “It is amazing to see the King performing in front of the maiden,” said Mwangi Tanaguza from Kenya. A group from the Eastern Cape in neighboring South Africa also took to the arena and showcased their cultural dances before Princess Sikhanyiso, who is King Mswati’s eldest daughter. The Princess closed the ceremony with her customary solo dance. Some of the King’s guests included Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela and King Mabhudu of Ka Tembe. The main day of the Reed Dance marks the end of the eight- day ceremony, while maidens from the Shiselweni Region in the South of Swaziland will also get a chance to host the event soon after the official date is announced. This ceremony normally lasts three days.
