STATEMENT ON SWAZI MTN / SPTC DISPUTE
Following the International Court of Arbitration’s draft award, the essence and implications of which are that the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) immediately terminate the mobile component of any telephone network and service operated by it;
- 1.Government has initiated negotiations between SPTCSwazi MTN limited, MTN International and Swaziland Empowerment Limited (collectively referred to as “MTN”). The negotiations are aimed at resolving the impasse between SPTC and “MTN” and reaching an amicable solution that will not only benefit the parties but also the telecommunications industry as a whole in the Kingdom.
- 2.In the backdrop of the need to speedily reach a solution the parties have made a firm undertaking to resolve the issues within a period of seven (7) days.
- 3.In the interim and in line with the spirit and understanding of the negotiations, SPTC has made a firm commitment and undertaking that it willdesist from:
- The sale, marketing and advertising in whatsoever manner of any wireless product, including but not limited to the fixed phone and Data modems.
- Connecting any new customers to wireless products.
3.1.1 SPTC will however in the interim continue to service all existing customers of wireless products.
