GOVERNMENT PRESS STATEMENT
NO 27: 2012
RE: GOVERNMENT POSITION ON THE SPTC TERMINATED SERVICES
Following the public outcry and misinterpretation of facts in the termination of some services provided by the Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (SPTC) with effect from 1st October 2012, Government wishes to throw some light on the issue as follows;
- Both the Supreme Court of the land and the International Court of Arbitration ruled against the SPTC on the case of failure to stick to the Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with Swazi MTN. Government therefore had no option but to ensure compliance. There is no way in which Government could have ignored the rulings of these courts and militated against the law. The decision by Government may not be pleasant but it was the right thing to do in the circumstance.
- In all corporate situations there are risks, challenges and losses. The SPTC situation is a challenge which is not insurmountable.
- Government will not abandon SPTC but will work tirelessly to secure a way forward and harness a lasting solution in collaboration with all relevant stake holders.
